After filling Nana in on our Thanksgiving plans—and Glo insisting on bringing flame-roasted marshmallows and yams she would torch herself—Nana passed around bottled waters, and we got down to business.

“Our victim is Felix Darrow. Age fifty-eight. Selkie shifter. Married, with one grown child. Owned Shipwrecked Relics for close to thirty years. There’s no major debt on the house or his business. No criminal record.

“We know Lars Pendleton—who is still in the wind—called him around 2:00 this morning to let Felix know he’d found the fertility stone,” I said. “Felix was to drop off a pre-determined sum of money at a place they both knew and pick up the fertility stone. Aiden Sloan told us Felix said Lars was scared for his life, so after dropping off the stone in their secret location, he was going to lie low. Felix gets the stone, comes home, calls a few potential buyers, then goes to his shop. We assume he has the fertility stone with him at this time. Jace, Glo, and I witnessed the fight between Felix and Aiden Sloan around 8:00 this morning. Doc Bowers said time of death was between 10:15 and 10:30. When I arrived at the shop around 10:45, it was obvious someone either wanted to make it look like a robbery had taken place, or the killer was angry and took it out on the store. The wooden box found at the crime scene dates back to the 1600s, and with the faint presence of magic still evident, we believe the fertility stone was at one point in the box.”

“Now we need to find the stone,” Glo said.

I narrowed my eyes at her. “Now we need to figure out who killed Felix Darrow, and then locate the fertility stone so PADA can keep it secure within the Cursed Relics Division.”

“Isn’t that what I said?” Glo batted her huge eyelashes at me. “I thought that’s what I said.”

Jace’s lips twitched, but he didn’t outright smile. “Since we haven’t heard any whispers of someone trying to sell the fertility stone—and trust me, by now we’d be hearing rumblings—my money is on the fertility stone has gone missing.”

“But how?” I mused. “Glo told us she overheard Felix say the fertility stone was hidden in a safe place at his store and was cloaked. Right?”

Glo nodded, her scales glowing purple and teal. “Yes. He said he cloaked it with his favorite shoes.”

“That makes zero sense,” I said.

Jace shrugged. “Just another piece of the puzzle to figure out.”

“The first background I have is on the wife, Marsha Darrow. Age fifty-seven. Werewolf. Married, one grown child. She and Felix own the house jointly. Not sure about the business. Mrs. Darrow has no criminal history, and really no work history.”

“She admitted she knew little about Felix’s business,” I said. “And to be honest, unless the background shows a red flag on her private financials or something like that, I’m not sure what her motive would be. Did you find a big life insurance policy, maybe?”

“There is a life insurance policy,” Nana said.
